Find out how you can make your garden more wildlife friendly

Your garden can be used as an excellent place to help Biodiversity.

In recent times our countryside is providing fewer opportunities for wildlife to thrive. Due to a decline in suitable habitats for wildlife as well as less food for them being available.

By gardening in a particular way we can provide some of this wildlife with the habitats and food they need. This method has become known as wildlife gardening. Wildlife gardening can be carried out to any level, from simply planting a few nectar rich cultivars and species of plants in your formal borders or composting your garden waste, to stopping use of all pesticides or creating a wildflower meadow. With over 100, 000 acres in Wales, gardens make up a significant habitat, so combined together each individual garden can make a difference.

Conwy County Borough Council Is now a partner of the Snowdonia Wildlife Gardening Partnership, whose main aim is to promote wildlife gardening in the Snowdonia, Conwy and Gwynedd areas. The partnership is made up of local authorities, statutory bodies, academic institutions, members of the horticulture profession, voluntary organisations and community groups. It runs the ‘Best Wildlife Garden’ competition, which has categories for private gardens, schools, businesses (e.g. pub gardens, office grounds), and community groups (e.g. WI groups, scout and brownie groups).

The partnership has also produced this information pack and leaflet, which is available free of charge from the Wildlife Gardening Officer, Anna Williams on 01248 360981 or email: annawilliams@wildlifetrustswales.org
