The Translation Service is part of the Language Services Unit within the Legal and Democratic Services. The Unit is managed by the Democratic Services Manager. The work of the Unit is based on the requirements of the Council's statutory Welsh Language Scheme.
The Service houses a number of qualified, professional translators and is exclusively an internal service undertaking all aspects of a translation service including written translation from English to Welsh and vice versa, and simultaneous translation at Council meetings from Welsh into English only.
Part of the function of the central Translation Service is to facilitate bilingualism in all Council Services. Staff members are always on hand to offer assistance and professional guidance on detailed and specialist matters such as the design of bilingual publications and signage wording, correct language and specialist terms, as well a encouraging a positive attitude towards those aspects of the Welsh language policy and good practice relating to translation.
The Service also offers a proof-reading and editing service to Welsh speaking members of staff wishing to produce their own documentation through the medium of Welsh, encouraging self-confidence amongst Council employees and gradually reducing dependency on the Service.
