National Flower Bed Competition

flower display

The Tatton Park National Flower Bed Competition is an annual event through which local authorities and communities can entice visitors to their counties and demonstrate the standard of horticulture that will be on offer in their parks and green spaces.

Conwy have entered the competition 5 times and have been successful each year gaining Bronze, Silver and Silver-Gilt medals, the first Gold medal was won in 2008 for the butterfly garden design which also won Best in Show and went on to win the prestigious Wigan Cup.

In 2010 a second Gold medal was won for the SOS save our swarm display which also won the Best Use of Plants award.  The flowerbed was fun and vibrant and attracted a lot of attention from the crowd throughout the week for both its visual appeal and serious environmental message.  Depicting a giant honey bee and 3 hives all sitting on honeycomb the bed represented the importance of bees and aimed to incorporate the theme of the International Year of Biodiversity and draw attention to the plight of the honey bee whose numbers have been falling in recent years.

At the end of the show the plants used in the display are sold to the general public to raise money for Ty Gobaith children's hospice.
