Youth Homeless Outreach Workers

Homelessness is the most extreme form of social exclusion, and can have a devastating impact on a young person. It is the aim of the project to support and empower young people to make informed, positive decisions, and actively involve them in influencing the systems that affect their daily lives.

To do this, the project has two main objectives.

  • The first is to encourage young people, through community development methodology, to interact with agencies such as the Youth Service, The Police, Social Services, Housing authorities/ associations, and other community projects. Such working partnerships are then able to encourage young people to discuss issues important to them, influence decisions, and promote participation and good practice.
  • The second is a preventative, educational service, offered to local Schools, Colleges and youth organisations. The Outreach Worker is able to deliver dynamic and flexible sessions, using the Shelter Cymru resource 'Housemate', to raise awareness on the multi faceted issue of youth homelessness.
