Essential Website Maintenance – Thursday 9th January 2020

We will be carrying out essential website maintenance in the afternoon which will affect some functionality. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience the work may cause and will do all we can to keep disruption to an absolute minimum.

Memorials and Remembrances

Summary (optional)
Remembering a loved one in our green spaces.
start content

We have a high level of applications for memorial benches and a long waiting list. Because of this, we are not able to accept any new requests for memorial benches in our parks, promenades or green spaces at the moment. We’re sorry for any disappointment this causes.

We are looking at other options for memorials and new locations where memorial benches could be installed.

Our website will be updated with new information when it is available.

Memorials are available at our crematorium and cemeteries. Please contact our Bereavement Services team at bereavementservices@conwy.gov.uk or call 01492 577733 for more information.

Memorials – Nature Reserves and the Great Orme Country Park

We do not permit memorials of any kind in our nature reserves or the Great Orme Country Park. They can become unsightly, add to the litter problem and detract from the feeling of wildness that many people come to enjoy.

The summit of Conwy Mountain, areas of Great Orme and areas of Bryn Euryn, have nationally important scheduled monuments. Rearranging stones or creating structures within the scheduled areas is an offence under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

All our nature reserves have bye-laws in place and some are also designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Planting bulbs, flowers or any other plant is illegal. It is also illegal to disturb, destroy or remove any wild plant or vegetation (Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981).

Unauthorised plaques or memorials of any kind placed in our nature reserves or the Great Orme Country Park will be removed.

Balloons and sky lanterns

Releasing balloons and sky lanterns causes problems for grazing animals and wildlife both on land and at sea. They can cause fires and destroy valuable habitats.

Conwy County Borough Council is one of over 80 local authorities which have banned the release of balloons and sky lanterns.  We take seriously our commitment to habitat, wildlife protection and reducing any forms of litter entering the sea.

Scattering ashes

There is a Garden of Remembrance at Colwyn Bay Crematorium where you can scatter a loved one’s ashes, plant a rose with a memorial plaque or engrave a leaf on the memorial tree. Fees apply. Please contact our Bereavement Services team for more information ( 01492 577733 or BereavementServices@conwy.gov.uk).

Please do not scatter ashes without permission in our crematorium grounds or any cemeteries.

You do not need special permission to scatter ashes within our nature reserves, the Great Orme Country Park or our parks.

These protected places are enjoyed by many thousands of people each year. When scattering ashes, please respect these guidelines:

  • Scatter ashes discreetly and without ceremony, at a quiet time, and away from busy areas of the nature reserve or country park.
  • Scatter ashes widely so that heaps of ashes are not visible on the ground.
  • Do not leave memorials of any kind (including plaques, plants, flowers, toys, cards or trinkets), either on the day, or at any point in the future. These can quickly become unsightly and add to the amount of litter which has to be cleared. Many hundreds of people choose to have their ashes scattered on the Great Orme in particular – when memorials are left the appearance can be one of a memorial garden rather than the wild and beautiful place that people enjoy so much.
  • The Great Orme and some of our nature reserves are protected as Sites of Special Scientific Interest – it is illegal to plant bulbs, flowers or any other plant. It is also illegal to disturb, destroy or remove any wild plant or vegetation.
