Course aims and objectives:

Why is the MCA important and who does it affect?

The five core principles:

  1. How to assess capacity
  2. Who can make decisions about me?
  3. How to make a decision in a person’s best interests
  4. Criminal offences
  5. What else do I need to know

Learning outcomes:

  • Attendees to be aware of their legal responsibilities under the Mental Capacity Act and the implications for their practice
  • Understand the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and have the knowledge to apply them in their everyday practice
  • Be able to use a framework for supporting and involving people when making decisions
  • Recognise how the provisions in the Act and the Code of Practice help to keep people safe
  • Understand how the Mental Capacity Act supports human rights
  • Reflect and explore on how human rights principles inform good practice when supporting people to make decisions
  • Reflect on what else you need to do to improve your knowledge and understanding of how to provide care and support to people
