Personalised Mentoring

The Key to Overcoming Barriers and Finding Work

Our team of Mentors are experienced professionals dedicated to providing specialist employment advice and intensive 1-to-1 support to help unemployed people move closer to, and into, work.

Everyone’s circumstances and journey to employment are different, which is why we offer personalised mentoring tailored to each individual. This focused approach is central to our participants’ success.

Michelle Little became a Mentor in 2024, having previously worked as the Hub’s Training Coordinator. Here, she reflects on her first year in the role: “My time as Training Coordinator gave me a solid understanding of the employability programme and the tools needed to help people navigate today’s job market. Supporting others has always been a passion of mine, so stepping into the Mentor role felt like a natural and rewarding progression.

Over the past year, I’ve seen the real-life challenges our participants face. These include everything from difficulties with CV writing and job searching, to limited access to digital resources, financial constraints, childcare responsibilities, and the emotional strain of prolonged unemployment.

These barriers can feel overwhelming – not only for the individuals experiencing them but also for those trying to help. I’ve learned that while practical support like CV building, interview prep, and job search guidance is crucial, the most powerful tool we can offer is belief. Having someone in your corner who sees your potential can be a real catalyst for change.

Building trusting relationships with participants is key. When someone feels heard and supported, they’re more open, and together we can better tackle the obstacles in their way. This approach helps individuals build confidence, recognise their strengths, and pursue their career goals with renewed determination.

I’ve also benefitted from the collective knowledge and experience of my colleagues – not just other mentors, but the whole team. We work in a collaborative environment that values shared learning, helping us improve our strategies and approaches over time.

In addition, our partnerships with third-party organisations allow us to connect participants with a wide range of support, from training and counselling to resources we may not offer directly. This holistic support network strengthens our ability to empower participants and prepare them for long-term success.

Over the past 12 months, I’ve come to understand just how vital empathy and a deep understanding of individual needs are in this work. I’ve grown professionally and personally and have been inspired by the resilience and determination of those I’ve supported. It’s a privilege to walk alongside them on their journey to meaningful, paid employment.”
