Living in temporary accommodation and with a spent criminal conviction from years ago, Darren was struggling to find work. His situation meant his mental health was suffering and he was lacking in confidence and had lost faith in his own abilities. Darren reached out to Conwy Employment Hub as he knew he needed help to find work and be able to support his children.
Wendy Day was appointed to be Darren’s personal mentor and at their first meeting it was clear to her that their initial focus needed to be on improving his confidence before they could consider looking for work. They met on a weekly basis for a number of weeks to work on his personal development which was about building his confidence and the belief in his own self-worth.
Wendy and Darren then went on to work on preparing his CV and despite him having an inconsistent work history, Wendy was able to highlight to Darren the experience he had as well as his transferable skills. They also prepared covering letters so Darren learnt the importance of tailoring these to fit with job descriptions.
Wendy then introduced Darren to a local recruitment agency making them aware that he was job ready and looking for work as soon as possible. Within a week of this, Darren attended an induction with a local recycling company which he successfully completed and started work with them the next day.
Darren is enjoying his work as a refuse recycling collector, and the work hours enable him to collect his children from school a few times every week and keep up his football training to maintain his fitness and wellbeing.
