David needed the Hub’s support to help him gain his PCV driving licence and employment as a coach driver.

David had worked in social care across various roles for over 20 years and took the decision to leave so he could use his multiple skills in another sector.

He successfully gained a role as a trainee bus driver where he was taught the ropes from working in the depot to on the buses before starting the training to become a bus driver.  Unfortunately David failed his test and due to prior commitments wasn’t able to resit it so he was made redundant.

Having never been out of work before, David wanted to quickly get back into employment and followed up a recommendation to contact the Conwy Employment Hub to see if it could help him gain his PCV licence (passenger-carrying vehicle with over 16 seats).

David was assigned his own personal mentor, Lorraine, who discussed his background, experience, skills and current driving qualifications which included an Advanced Drivers Licence, LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) theory, hazard perception and CPC licences so the support he required was help with the funding to take the test.

The Hub’s role is to support people with training, skill development as well as finding employment and with excellent contacts with employers in the area, Lorraine suggested to David that a local coach company be approached to see if they had any opportunities for him.

Alpine Travel is one of the UK’s leading luxury, business and executive coach hire companies based in Llandudno and on hearing about David and his experience they were keen to meet him as soon as possible.  The meeting took place within days and it went so well that Alpine offered to pay 50% of David’s training costs and the Hub agreed to pay the other half.  Within three weeks, David was on a Coach Driver course which he passed with flying colours resulting in Alpine offering him a full time coach driver role.

In just over four weeks after his initial contact with the Hub, David had not only passed his required driving test but he was also working and loving his job with Alpine Travel.
