Course aims and objectives:

  • To build on the mandatory training and provide governors with a clear definition of their strategic role, how to fulfil it and how to be the ‘critical’ friend’ to the school.

This is an interactive workshop looking at governors’ strategic and leadership role and responsibilities they carry for school improvement. The session focuses on what is meant by strategic; it will explore ways in which a governing body can plan, monitor and evaluate the performance of the school and its staff and looks at the role of the ‘critical friend’ in ensuring sustainable improvement.

It will also consider the legal obligations of governors and the expectations of Local Authorities and Welsh Government to deliver school improvement.

New governors will be expected to complete induction training as determined by Welsh Government Regulations.

This session will cover those areas required under the legislation:

  • The different and complementary roles of governors, including role of Chair and Clerk
  • Key roles and responsibilities of governing bodies
  • How to be an effective governor including the difference between governance and management
  • Where to access further support and training

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Ensure governors understand their role and responsibilities for improving school performance
  • Understand the boundaries between governance and management
  • Understanding of the questions to ask and balance ‘challenge’ with ‘support’
  • To improve the effectiveness of Governing Bodies
