New Active Travel Routes

New Active Travel routes we are working on or we’ve recently completed.

These routes are designed to follow the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Design Guidance.

The Highways Act 1980 allows us to authorise cycling on designated footpaths. We will do this by putting up signs to tell users that the route can be used by both cyclists and pedestrians. For users with visual impairment, we will identify the route using corduroy tactile paving in the footpath.

Craig y Don

The project focuses on Llandudno, Craig Y Don area from Nant y Gamar Road, Roumania Drive, Queens Road, Balfour Road and Clarence Drive to Clarence Crescent.

Proposed works include:

  • A parallel ‘zebra’ crossing on Queens Road
  • Upgraded parallel ‘zebra’ crossing at Clarence Crescent
  • Extra crossing places for pedestrians, especially at Ysgol Gogarth and Ysgol Craig Y Don
  • Widened footways and shared use paths
  • ‘Quiet Street’ zones and extra road markings
  • Traffic calming on Nant y Gamar Rd, Balfour Rd and Roumania Drive
  • Flat top raised crossing points at most junctions with side roads adjoining the route

Marl Lane and Marl Drive

We will be constructing new links for the cycle and pedestrian route along Marl Lane and Marl Drive. These will be in the Albert Drive and Victoria Drive areas and near the Nant Y Glyn junction on Marl Drive.

Penrhyn Bay

Ysgol Y Creuddyn and Ysgol Glanwydden to the B5115 roundabout.

Conwy to Parc Caer Seion

The route is designed so pedestrians and cyclists can share part of the footpath route, with some on-road sections for cyclists.

The Gerddi’r Morfa link path

From its junction with Mona Road and Whinacres for a distance of approximately 250 metres in a south-easterly direction.

From the northern access to Ysgol Aberconwy School’s Sports Centre to the southern access to Ysgol Aberconwy School’s Car Park, a distance of approximately 230 metres

The Bodlondeb Woods link footpath

From its access to Morfa Drive to Conwy Tennis Courts a distance of approximately 630 metres

From its junction with Maesdu Avenue to its junction with Maesdu Road, a distance of approximately 315 metres in a north easterly direction.

Station Road:

The route includes improved crossings, wider footpaths and cycle parking facilities.

Abergele: Safe Routes in Communities

The scheme will provide a shared use route for pedestrians and cyclists from Sea Road, through Pentre Mawr Park, along Maes Canol and Ffordd Y Morfa to the schools. The route is designed so pedestrians and cyclists can share part of the footpath route. The design follows the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Design Guidance. 

The work will include:

  • Widening and improving the shared use paths
  • Improving crossing facilities: upgrading existing and adding new crossings
  • Improving street lighting
  • Introducing some parking restrictions (double yellow lines) and traffic calming measures
  • New parking bays at Maes Canol and Ffordd y Morfa
  • New raised crossing points at Maes Canol, Ffordd Y Morfa and Llwyn Morfa
