As a valued Foster Carer with Conwy County Borough Council you will receive regular payments to cover the cost of caring for a child or young person as stipulated by the Welsh Government.
It is payable to all foster carers who are subject to Fostering Regulations and are caring for a Conwy looked after child (or children). It is structured to meet a child’s needs over the medium to long term and includes entitlement to all child related payments including holiday, birthday and festivity breaks.
The maintenance allowance is intended to cover all of the general costs associated with the care of the child or young person and their day to day needs. The allowance is aimed at maintaining a normal standard of care for the looked after child or young person.
The maintenance allowance includes purchased items such as food, clothing and social activities. It also covers contact and leisure activities. Indirect costs such as transport, family outings and any additional general household maintenance costs such as utility bills are also covered by this allowance.
A number of foster carers additionally receive a professional fee similar to that of a salary. These payments will depend on your individual circumstances and the needs of the service.
You will also be paid as a self-employed person (Due to the generous tax relief provided by HM Revenue & Customs foster carers pay very little (if any) tax and national insurance).
“Conwy Fostering Agency have supported both of us through a very difficult time, we feel very appreciative and realise that we are part of a Fostering Family and not just a name on a pay roll. I am proud to be a Foster Carer for Conwy.” (Foster Carer Questionnaire, January 2015)
