Course details:

To familiarise staff & carers with the implications of the Appropriate Adult role as required in the Police and Criminal Evidence Act and its associated Codes of Practice in relation to the detention, questioning and identification of mentally disordered or learning disabled persons in Police custody. To relate this knowledge to acting as an Appropriate Adult for juveniles.

16th February 2022 9.30pm - 4.30pm Coed Pella Sally Plumb Targeted Services – Community Wellbeing, Disability Team, Family Support & Intervention, Looked After Children, Older People & HSW, Vulnerable People Team, Youth Justice Service, Foster Carers

Target Group - Staff and carers who may be called upon to fulfil the role of Appropriate Person either for a person in their care or as a trained professional. This training is suitable for those new to the role of Appropriate Adult as well as those requiring a refresher.


Course aims and objectives:

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

  • State the legislative requirements of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act as they relate to the role of Appropriate Adult.
  • List the duties of the Appropriate Adult.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the principals involved in supporting a mentally disordered or otherwise mentally vulnerable person in an interview.
  • Apply the learning to acting as an Appropriate Adult for juveniles
  • Understand how the above knowledge can be applied in practice together with its policy and procedure implications where appropriate.
