Course aims:

The courses have been designed to promote the principles of the SSWB Act 2014 and will cover:

  • Voice and control of the individual
  • Prevention and early intervention – including recognising the signs and symptoms of errors, side effect and reduced effectiveness
  • Well-being – supporting people to achieve their own well-being
  • Co-production – encouraging individual to become more involved in the administration of their medication

The courses have also been designed to ensure compliance with the RISCA 2016 and The Regulated Services Regulations 2017 which come into force on 02.04.2018.

The courses will focus on the current medication policy as per Conwy Council:

Identify key legislation relating to medication management:

  • Registration and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016
  • Statutory guidance on meeting the regulations
  • Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • NICE Managing medicines in care homes [SC1]
  • NICE Managing medicines for adults receiving social care in the community [NG67]

Define key terms:

  • Prompt
  • Assist
  • Administer

Describe what information must be on:

  • Prescription
  • Medication label
  • MAR chart

Describe how to support people with medication by:

  • Prompting
  • Assisting
  • Administering

Course objectives:

  • Define the term “medication” and explain types of medication and how they work
  • Explore route of administration and time of action
  • Explain the terms contraindication and side (adverse) effect and when these are most likely
  • List the 5 rights of medication administration
  • Demonstrate how to correctly complete a MAR chart
  • Demonstrate how to correctly complete stock control information on a MAR chart
  • Identify the most common types of medication errors, why these occur and how to avoid them
  • Describe the process for retuning medication
  • Explain the purpose and process of medication audits including MAR chart audits
  • Demonstrate knowledge base via a multiple choice examination
