Course aims and objectives

To attend this course attendees need to be in a position where they manage medication and assess the competence of those who administer medication.

The course will provide underpinning knowledge on the management of medication in social care settings and to enable those who manage medication systems to assess the competence of those who administer medication.

Course content:

  • Identify key legislation relating to medication management.
  • Identify the key elements of a robust medication management system
  • Procedures
  • Staff training
  • Assessing competence
  • Audits
  • Error recording and investigation
  • Data gathering and analysis
  • Use the key legislation to develop medication management systems, policies and procedures.
  • Medication management systems including E-Systems.
  • Identify the components of staff training in medication administration.
  • Assessing competence
  • Auditing and using the audits to drive continuous improvements
  • Identify the common administration errors, the root cause and how to prevent them.
  • Describe how to investigate a medication error.
  • Use data on medication management, administration, audits and errors to identify service improvements.
  • Take away a model medication administration competence assessment which you can use in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate underpinning knowledge by means of a post course assessment.

The courses have also been designed to ensure compliance with the RISCA 2016 and The Regulated Services Regulations 2017 which came into force on 2 April 2018.

The courses will focus on the current medication policy as per Conwy County Borough Council.
