Benches on Colwyn Bay Pier

New benches were installed on Colwyn Bay Pier recently.

The benches have been funded through the Welsh Government Brilliant Basics fund and Conwy County Borough Council. Brilliant Basics is a capital fund to deliver small-scale tourism infrastructure improvements across Wales.

The design and colour scheme of the twelve benches is sympathetic to the design of the balustrades from the original Grade II listed Pier. These balustrades were retained from the original Pier and repaired, and replicas were also made, when the new truncated Pier was constructed. The colours used on the decorative ironwork are taken from the results of a paint analysis that dated the colour scheme back to 1934.

The ends of the new benches match the Pier balustrades and were built by a specialist heritage bench manufacturer and cast in a foundry using a custom made pattern before being hand painted.

Cllr Geoff Stewart, Conwy County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood and the Environment, said, “We’re very pleased to see these benches installed which will mean people will be able to enjoy the Pier and the views of the beach and coast. The Pier and benches acknowledge the legacy of Victorian engineers and help provide a sense of place. The project ensures the Pier remains a focal point for the town of Colwyn Bay which can be enjoyed by future generations."
