Colwyn Bay's Tennis Centre celebrates 20th anniversary

The James Alexander Barr Tennis Centre in Colwyn Bay has celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special day of doubles tournaments.

The much-loved Ffit Conwy facility located in the town’s Parc Eirias, officially opened its doors to keen tennis enthusiasts on 18th October 2003.

With two indoor courts and four floodlit courts outdoors, it has played host to thousands of coaching sessions and tournaments, plus private hire and holiday clubs.

To mark its anniversary, the Centre, which was named in memory of a sports and recreation officer at Colwyn Borough Council, held a morning of Fast4 Tennis double tournaments for its members on Sunday 22nd October.

16 members played back-to-back games, followed by the presentation of prizes. The winners of the main tournament were Andrew Kirkham and Evelyn Kirkham and runners up Adam Gorst and Hannah Kennedy. The Plate trophy was presented to the winners Aled Roberts and Tania Dupre and runners up Leon Davies and Mena Hitchings.

Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy County Borough Council Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “Conwy Council is proud of the role the James Alexander Barr Tennis Centre has played over the last 20 years in the development of tennis in the region.

“The facilities at the Centre are great for all users and abilities; whether they are young people who are picking up a racket for the first time and trying out a knock about session, or seasoned tennis enthusiasts. It’s an important objective for us as a Council to provide sporting opportunities at all levels and encourage people to stay active.”

Ffit Conwy Area Manager, Neil Williams said: “Thank you to everyone involved in celebrating our anniversary! We have a fantastic tennis centre at Eirias which is accessible to all ages and abilities. Ideal for those looking to get started playing tennis or those who want to improve their game.”

After the matches, club member Cllr Abdul Khan Local Member on Conwy County Borough Council for Colwyn Bay’s Glyn Ward, presented the winners with medals and trophies.

Cllr Abdul Khan said: “It gives me great pleasure to see everyone enjoying a wonderful morning of tennis to celebrate the anniversary.  Well done to everyone who took part in the celebrations. We look forward to the future of the centre, welcoming all to come and play a racquet sport.”

The Tennis Centre facilities are open to the general public, with ‘Pay & Play’ sessions of tennis or badminton bookable throughout the week.
