Deputy Minister Officially Opens Canolfan Dinorben
Canolfan Dinorben, the new family centre in Abergele, was officially opened by Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services Julie Morgan this week (28/03/19).The centre was awarded nearly £470,000 in Welsh Government funding to transform the former Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan Foundation school building.
Canolfan Dinorben is part of Conwy County Borough Council’s community based support for families. It’s open for all families to use, and offers activities, advice and support; with family workers, health visitors, youth services and others on hand to help. Welsh Government funding has also been given to provide Flying Start and Families First services at the centre.
Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services, Julie Morgan said: “The new centre will make a positive difference to the local community, who will be able to access family services in a central location. The launch was a great opportunity to meet the organisations who will play a key role in delivering services. I would encourage people to visit and utilise this fantastic new support centre.”
During her visit, the Deputy Minister met some key people and toured the new facilities, before unveiling a plaque in front of the gathered guests.
Cllr Liz Roberts, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Community Services, said “It was a pleasure to welcome the Deputy Minister here today. It’s given us the opportunity to express our thanks to the Welsh Government for their support in developing this family centre. It’ll enable this fantastic team to provide activities and support in the local community. I wish the staff and local families all the very best in their new centre.”
Sally Holland, the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, was also present at the official opening. She said: 'I am delighted to be part of the opening of the family centre today. Children have rights to be supported by adults to grow up in healthy and safe environments in order to reach their full potential. Centres like this, which aim to support children as early as possible in a joined-up manner with services working together, reflect what families have told me works best for them.'
The Family Support Team based at Canolfan Dinorben serves communities in the east of Conwy (Kinmel Bay, Towyn, Abergele, Llanefydd, Llanfairtalhaearn, and Llansannan).
