Letters from Lockdown

Conwy Archive Service, which looks after the historic records of Conwy County for future generations, is asking residents to create their own little bit of history.

The Archive Service wants to capture the memories of people in the county as they live through the historic and unprecedented times of the Covid-19 crisis. The aim is to create a lasting record so that future generations will be able to have an insight into the personal stories of how people reacted to the circumstances they find themselves in today.

The Archive is asking residents of all ages to write a letter to the future describing their life under lockdown. The letters can include what has changed about life at the moment, what people might have experienced that has been unexpected, and also their hopes for the future.

Cllr Mark Baker, Cabinet Member for Arts, Heritage and Culture, said, “We’ve keen to keep a record of the period that we’re living through now and the Archive Service provides the perfect way to preserve these to give future generations the opportunity to learn about people’s experience of the current situation”

The Archive Service would also like to receive pictures of artwork people have created which has been inspired by the current situation.

Letters and pictures can be sent by email to: Archifau.Archives@conwy.gov.uk Contributors can include their name, age and address if they wish. Contact the Archives on 01492 577550.

And if, during a lockdown clear out, anyone has discovered documents and artefacts that reflect the history of Conwy and its people, the Archives Service would love to hear about them to discuss whether they could be permanently looked after at the Conwy Archives.
