Community Marks the Re-launch of Llandudno's Historic Colonnade

Ail-lansio Re-launch Colonnade

The Colonnade has been a prominent feature of the Llandudno promenade since the 1930s.

Conwy County Borough Council was pleased to welcome residents, visitors, and local organisations to celebrate the re-launch of the Llandudno Colonnade on Friday 20 March, following a programme of restoration work supported by the UK Government Shared Prosperity Fund and the Welsh Government Brilliant Basics Fund.

The event took place between 4pm and 6pm on the promenade, where attendees gathered to mark the work that has taken place as part of the project and the renewed future of this much loved seafront landmark. A ribbon‑cutting ceremony, with invited officials marked the occasion.

Throughout the event, guests enjoyed performances and activities provided by local groups, including music from the Llandudno Swing Band, artwork demonstrations from David Sharp, and dance from the Linzi Grace School of Dance. Children’s activities and garden games offered relaxed entertainment for families, helping to create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere.

Several local organisations also took part with stalls and displays, including Bangor University’s Seafood Trail Cymru, the Wales Coast Path, the Homefront Museum, a 1930s motorbike display, and Llandudno Museum.

Visitors were also able to view a selection of historic photographs of the Colonnade through the decades. Some guests chose to take part in the optional 1930s smart dress theme, reflecting the era in which the Colonnade was first built.

The Colonnade has been a prominent feature of the Llandudno promenade since the 1930s. Restoration works focused on preserving its historic character, improving safety, and ensuring the structure can continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years. The Council worked closely with Mostyn Estates throughout the project to maintain the integrity of the original design.

In addition to the work completed so far, there are interpretation panels and seating to be installed at a later date. Funding is also being sought to replace lighting columns on the upper deck, and an application for Listed Building Consent is currently going through the planning process.

Cllr Sharon Doleman, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Economy and Communications, said: “The Colonnade is an important part of Llandudno’s heritage and identity, and I’m delighted to see it restored to its former elegance. These improvements ensure that this treasured landmark can be enjoyed for many years to come, and I’m thrilled that we’re able to celebrate with the local community.

“My thanks go to the performers, volunteers, partners, and attendees who supported the celebration, and everyone who contributed to the success of the project.”
