About this consultation
In 2022, Conwy released a five-year corporate plan to address the global climate crisis. The plan aims to reduce carbon emissions, adapt to and mitigate climate change, and ensure positive climate impacts. As part of this effort, Conwy is focusing on reducing waste and increasing reuse, repair and recycling with a new Resource and Waste Strategy.
Over recent years we have made great progress and been proactive in our approach to support residents and business recycle more of their waste and make informed decisions on reducing their waste, enabling repair and increasing recycling.
We are always looking ahead to ensure our services can meet the needs of our residents, and make improvements, but must also prepare for the following challenges:
- The global climate crisis and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions to net zero
- Meeting recycling targets set by Welsh Government by increasing our recycling rate to 70%
- Policy reforms that will support increased recycling, reuse and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
- Balancing budgetary constraints
- Making sure our waste infrastructure can accommodate the collection of more recycling and meeting the net zero carbon target set by Welsh Government by 2050.
Our draft Resource and Waste Strategy 2026-2031 has been developed to respond to these challenges and seek out opportunities.
Within the strategy we have outlined six key objectives which are:
- Reduce waste and increase reuse
- Increase recycling
- Provide a resilient, efficient, well-run service for residents and businesses in Conwy
- Support the Council's decarbonisation ambitions
- Future-proof our service and the support infrastructure for the waste and recycling service
- Communication, engagement and education
