This is a short, 3 hour, classroom-based educational session addressing the basic principles of infection prevention and control, covering the following:

- Chain of infection
- Methods of transmission
- Standard infection control procedures
- Risk assessment
- Hand hygiene
- Waste and sharps
- PPE
- The care environment
- Care equipment
- Monitoring of exposure
- Linen and laundry
- Respiratory hygiene
- Dealing with spillages of bodily fluids
- Managing outbreaks
- Obtaining specimens
- Leadership and governance
- Knowledge assessment
