CIHT Awards

Conwy County Borough Council been awarded in 3 categories at the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation awards for the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project.

Work on the Colwyn Bay Waterfront Project stretched over 2 miles from Splash Point / The Arches in at the Old Colwyn end of the Promenade to Combermere Gardens in Rhos on Sea.

Coastal defence improvements have been made in the form of imported sand as well as rock revetments to protect essential infrastructure like the A55 and railway. As part of the improvements, walkways have been widened to create shared use paths, new shelters, street furniture and accessible play equipment have all been added as well as a fishing platform and the addition of Horizon Shine café.

Phase 3 (Old Colwyn) won the Environment & Sustainability Award. The phase of the project included:

  • Protecting the Victorian sea wall with a new 800m rock revetment
  • Raising the height of the promenade
  • A new fishing platform
  • Improved beach access
  • New lighting
  • Shared use path
  • Electric vehicle charging points
  • Additional disabled parking spaces
  • A variety of environmental and biodiversity enhancements, including ecoconcrete tidepool units, vertipools and textured concrete on the new sea wall to provide habitats for marine species

Phase 2b (Rhos on Sea) won the Health, Safety & Wellbeing Award and Infrastructure Project of the Year. This phase of the project was also highly commended in the Active Travel Category. Phase 2b included:

  • 1 million tonnes of sand placed in front of the existing sea wall
  • Separate walking and shared use paths
  • A variety of upgraded street furniture
  • Play and recreation spaces, including play equipment, games and musical instruments
  • New lighting
  • Shelters
  • Planters
  • Public art and historical information tiles
  • Electric vehicle charging points
  • Additional disabled parking spaces

Two kiosks are currently being built off-site and will be being installed on the Rhos on Sea section of the project in Spring 2026.
