Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Order

Dog Control PSPO

The Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) is on the agenda for discussion by Conwy Councillors this month.

Feedback from the consultation that took place this summer will be presented to the Economy and Place Scrutiny Committee on 15 October and then to Cabinet on 20 October.

The report recommends that the existing Dog Control PSPO is extended for three years, with the following changes:

  • A seasonal dog exclusion zone is introduced for a limited area of the new beach in front of Cayley Promenade between Colwyn Bay and Rhos-on-Sea. This proposal has been amended from a year-round to a seasonal restriction following the public consultation.
  • Specific areas at The Oval and Maesdu Road Recreation Ground to be designated as dog exercise areas, as requested by Llandudno Town Council.
  • Betws Yn Rhos Sports and Recreation Ground to be designated as dogs excluded, as requested by Betws-yn-Rhos Sports Association.

Cllr Stephen Price, Cabinet Member Housing, Regulatory and Audit said, “Dog fouling is an issue that councillors hear about regularly from residents.

“These Dog Control Orders are intended to strike a fair balance, giving dog owners the freedom to enjoy public spaces with their pets while ensuring everyone can use those spaces safely and comfortably.

“The vast majority of dog owners are responsible, but these measures are aimed at tackling the small number who allow their dogs to foul, stray or be out of control in public places.”
