The activities focused on building confidence with numeracy through geometric art.

The results of a series of textile workshops are being exhibited at Conwy County Borough Council’s Coed Pella office. Just over twenty pieces are on display.

As part of Confidently You – a UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) initiative delivered under the umbrella of Conwy Employment Hub and Conwy County Borough Council – a group of participants took part in a series of creative workshops led by renowned textile artist Cefyn Burgess. The activities focused on building confidence with numeracy through geometric art, encouraging hands-on learning in a supportive and imaginative environment.

Libby Duo, Strategic Manager for Conwy Employment Service, Conwy County Borough Council, explained, “Confidently You is a practical support project designed for individuals with complex health conditions and barriers to employment. It combines physical activity, wellbeing support, skills development, and employability-focused sessions to improve participants’ confidence, wellbeing, and readiness for future opportunities.”

The creative sessions with Cefyn formed part of this holistic approach, offering a fresh and engaging way to strengthen numeracy skills.

Through felting and textile-based art, participants explored the mathematical principles behind geometric patterns, including symmetry, angles, measurement, and sequences. Working alongside Cefyn, they gained insight into how these concepts influence artistic design and textile construction. The process encouraged participants to reframe their relationship with maths by applying it in a practical, visual, and culturally rich context.

The workshops also explored the fascinating cultural connections between Wales and Shillong, India – a region historically linked through the influence of Welsh missionaries. Participants reflected on these shared histories and learnt about the continued practice of textile crafts among women in the Welsh-speaking Khasi community of Shillong.

Libby added: “The project exemplified Confidently You’s commitment to innovative, person-centred support – empowering individuals to rediscover their skills, build confidence, and take positive steps towards improved wellbeing and future opportunities.”

The exhibition is on display until Friday 29 August.
