Is your child starting a part time job?

Child Employment Permit
If your child wants to work, even a few hours a week, there’s an important step that must happen first.
Children aged between 13 and school leaving age* must have a child employment permit.
They must have a child employment permit issued by the local authority – this is a legal requirement under the Children and Young Person’s Act 1933.
Permits are free of charge and are issued by the Local Authority where the child works.
What this means for you:
- A permit must be in place before your child starts work.
- The employer usually applies but you will be contacted to provide consent.
Important things to know:
- Your child cannot work during school hours
- There are limits on how many hours they can work and the type of work they can do.
Work experience is a valuable opportunity for young people - the rules and regulations are designed to protect their health, safety and education.
More information and apply for a permit at: Child Employment Permit - Conwy County Borough Council
Notes:
*A child is legally allowed to leave school on the last Friday in June of the school year in which they turn 16 (usually the end of Year 11).
The rules apply to paid and unpaid work.
Child employees without a proper permit aren’t covered by workplace insurance.
