Conwy’s Education Service seeks permission to consult on changing the language category of Ysgol Babanod Llanfairfechan.
Ysgol Babanod Llanfairfechan has been gradually increasing its Welsh provision for learners for almost 20 years, and since September 2022 it has been designated as a T2 (transitioning towards dual language) school.
In line with Conwy’s Welsh in Education Strategic Plan (WESP), the school is now in a position to progress towards becoming fully Welsh medium.
Councillors at Conwy County Borough Council will be asked to give permission for a consultation to be carried out on the proposal to change the language category of Ysgol Babanod Llanfairfechan to a Category 3: Welsh Medium school.
The request will be presented to the Education & Skills Scrutiny Committee next week (22/09/26), with recommendations then presented to Cabinet on 6 October.
Cllr Aaron Wynne, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Education said: “Strategic school planning is a statutory duty of the Local Authority. With this comes the responsibility to ensure that our school organisation is fit for purpose, responsive to changing demographics, and capable of providing safe and appropriate learning environments for our children and young people.
“Conwy’s Welsh in Education Strategic Plan sets out our ambitions and targets to increase the number of children and young people accessing their education through the medium of Welsh.
“I support carrying out a consultation to gather feedback from stakeholders and the community on this important proposal. Their views will help us shape and agree the best approach for moving forward.”

If given the green light, the consultation is expected to start late October, and the responses will be reported back to councillors in Spring next year.
