Phase 2 of work on Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction path underway

Phase 2 of work on Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction path
Conwy County Borough Council has issued an update on the new path between Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction.
Work on the off-road path to connect Glan Conwy and Llandudno Junction for walking, cycling and wheeling started in March 2025.
The route is designed to make journeys easier, safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users and people with prams and mobility scooters.
Funded mostly by UK Government, the 2km finished route will include a 3m wide shared-use path, two new bridges crossing over the Conwy Valley Railway line and the Afon Ganol, and environmentally sensitive lighting to make it suitable for year-round use.
The work is being carries out by Jennings Building and Civil Engineering Ltd.
The first phase of the work included improving the path from Conwy Railway bridge to the RSPB carpark and beginning the new path passing beyond the visitors’ centre. Between March and September, only limited work took place outside of sensitive areas to avoid disturbing birds within the reserve.
As of December, contractors have:
• Completed the 650m path from Conwy Railway bridge to the RSPB access road
• Excavated, graded and constructed a further 1200m of the route to sub-base level from RSPB access road to Afon Ganol bridge
• Lifted the Afon Ganol bridge structure into place
• Started work on the ramp up to the railway bridge
The Railway bridge is being constructed off-site, with installation scheduled for Spring 2026.
To prepare for the bridge installation, work within Green Seat layby will start on Monday 19 January. The layby will be closed until May 2026.
Conwy County Borough Council are working with NMWTRA and Welsh Government on the onward route from Green Seat layby to the centre of Glan Conwy.
The project is scheduled to be completed in July 2026.
Cllr Mike Priestley, Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Infrastructure, said “The work is progressing well, running on programme and on budget. This is an impressive project we’re happy to be working on with local contractors Jennings Building and Civil Engineering Ltd, based in Colwyn Bay. Well done to our contractors as well as our in-house engineers. This really is a project for Conwy by Conwy.”
Cllr Sharon Doleman, Cabinet Member Sustainable Economy and Communications said “
An accessible route between Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and Llandudno Junction has been a long time coming.

The route will give residents easy access to Llandudno Junction, Conwy, Deganwy and Llandudno.”
