Plas yn Dre

Work is underway to demolish the former library and police station buildings at Plas yn Dre, Llanrwst.

Conwy County Borough Council has secured Welsh Government Transforming Towns Funding and started demolition of the two outdated buildings as part of a wider regeneration project for the town.

The Plas yn Dre site has been identified as a key strategic location with strong potential for commercial, retail, or mixed-use development. Removing these older buildings creates a valuable opportunity to reimagine the site and support economic growth. The regeneration of Plas yn Dre is intended to help revitalise Llanrwst, attract new businesses, and strengthen the town centre.

Library services, Council staff, and North Wales Police teams have already relocated to the Glasdir building nearby.

Cllr Sharon Doleman, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Economy and Communications, said, “This is an important moment for Llanrwst. Clearing the Plas yn Dre site marks the first real step toward unlocking its potential and creating new opportunities for our community. With support from the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme, we’re laying the groundwork for a development that can boost the local economy, attract new businesses and breathe fresh life into the town centre.”

Cllr Mike Priestley, Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Infrastructure, said, “We’re committed to doing this work responsibly, with ecological surveys and biodiversity measures in place to protect local wildlife. This project is about shaping a positive future for Llanrwst, and I’m pleased to see it moving forward.”

Work on the building demolition is due to be completed in March 2026.
