Porth Eirias under scrutiny

Porth Eirias
Members of Conwy’s Economy and Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee will receive a report next week about Porth Eirias, which was built as part of the flood prevention work on the promenade in Colwyn Bay and opened in 2013.
Councillors requested the update on the financial position of Porth Eirias as part of their role to review particular service areas.
The report includes information on income, expenditure and the overall position over recent years. It also outlines the options available for future changes and what steps are already being taken.
One concern is the loss of income from the commercial spaces in the building. Negotiations are currently taking place with potential new tenants for two of the available spaces.
There is also growing demand for suitable facilities from groups and individuals using the beach. In 2024 alone, nearly 3,000 young people participated in water safety activities run by Conwy County Borough Council.
In response to this increased demand, the Council submitted a bid to Welsh Government’s Brilliant Basics fund to develop the facilities available to beach users.
This bid was successful, and the report outlines the options for improvements, subject to agreement by the Welsh Government.
