Work begins on new Glan Conwy walking and cycling route

New route – under construction
Work has begun on a new off-road path to connect Glan Conwy and Llandudno Junction for people walking, cycling and wheeling, Conwy County Borough Council has announced.
The active travel route is designed to make journeys easier, safer and more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, wheelchair users, and people with prams and mobility scooters.
Funded mostly by UK Government, the 2km route will include two new bridges crossing over the Conwy Valley Railway line and Afon Ganol at the Glan Conwy end. The designs feature a 3 metre-wide paved path with environmentally sensitive lighting to make it suitable for year-round use.
The route will connect at the Llandudno Junction end with the recent active travel improvements carried out by Welsh Government at Junction 18 of the A55 (between the RSPB and Tesco roundabouts) and also link to the bridge to the Cob for onward travel to Conwy.
The work is being carried out by Jennings Building and Civil Engineering Ltd, based in Colwyn Bay.
The first phase of work includes improving the path from the Conwy railway bridge to the RSPB car park and beginning the new path passing beyond the visitors’ centre.
Between March and September, only limited work will take place outside of sensitive areas, to avoid disturbing birds within the reserve.
The second phase of work is due to begin in September 2025, working on the path through the reserve towards Glan Conwy.
Cllr Goronwy Edwards, Cabinet Member for Environment, Roads and Facilities – Infrastructure, said: “This route has been asked for by the public for many years. It will make it safer for Glan Conwy residents to walk or cycle to school, to work, or to get to other services. It’s an important part of the proposed Môr I’r Mynydd (Coast to Valley) active travel route, which we hope will run from Llandudno Junction to Betws y Coed.”
