Ysgol Glan Conwy pupils get first look at new Active Travel Route

RSPB Bridge Ysgol Glan Conwy

Pupils were on site to see the new pathway taking shape

This week, year 6 pupils from Ysgol Glan Conwy visited a new Active Travel route and bridges they have helped to name. Located near the RSPB reserve in Glan Conwy, the new route will open access and serve the community for years to come.

Pupils were on site to see the new pathway taking shape, learn more about the work involved and contribute to a time capsule that will be buried on site ahead of its official opening later this year.

Mrs Michelle Evans, Teacher Ysgol Glan Conwy said:

"It’s been wonderful to see the pupils get so engaged with this. They took their responsibility seriously and showed great enthusiasm in choosing names that reflect the local area. I’m really proud of them all"

During one of their regular school council sessions, the pupils were asked to create a shortlist of potential names put forward by residents. The pupils thought about how each name represented the new pathway and its benefits for the community, including encouraging walking and connecting people with local natural spaces. The names the children have chosen for the bridges reflect the legend of St Ffraid and celebrate our history as a village.

The shortlisted names were passed to the project team, who made the final selection:

  • Overall name of route will be “Lôn yr Adar”
  • The railway bridge will be “Pont Sanffraid”
  • Ganol Bridge will be “Pont y Brwyn”

Cllr Sharon Doleman, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Glan Conwy Ward Member, said:

"It’s fantastic to see young people helping to shape this hugely important project. Getting the school council involved gives pupils a voice and strengthens the connection between the community and this new Active Travel route, which will bring lasting benefits for Glan Conwy for many years to come"

The new bridge is part of the wider Active Travel route aimed at improving walking and cycling connections in Glan Conwy, supporting healthier lifestyles, cutting out the busy crossing at the Black Cat Roundabout, and better access to local amenities. Cllr Mike Priestley, Cabinet Member for Environment Roads and Facilities said:

“A lot of work has gone into creating this route and its bridges. Once open, Lôn yr Adar will provide safe, accessible, and environmentally friendly connections for Glan Conwy, that encourage active travel choices and open access to the area's green spaces”

Cllr Julie Fallon, Leader:

“Lôn yr Adar has been shaped by the community, named by its children, and built to serve residents for generations. I'm delighted to see it taking shape and look forward to its opening later this year."

The Active Travel route and bridges are expected to open to the public later this year.
