Conwy adopts Anti-Racism Charter

Conwy County Borough Council has signed up to the UNISON Cymru/Wales Anti-Racism Charter.

Councillors unanimously adopted the Unison Anti-Racism Charter at a meeting of the full Council on 19 October 2023.

The Charter commits the Council to a range of pledges designed to prevent all forms of conscious or unconscious racial bias.   The pledges include championing a racially diverse workforce, recognising the impact of racism on staff wellbeing and regularly reviewing the strategies to improve racial equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Cllr Chris Cater, Conwy’s Cabinet Member for Democracy & Governance said: “Conwy is the first North Wales council to sign-up and I’m pleased that these pledges are already integrated into our draft strategic equality plan and draft anti-racist action plan.

“By adopting the Charter, we’re showing that we are making a real commitment to tackling the disparities which exist between different groups. We pledge that Conwy will be anti-racist, not just non-racist, in all that we do and we will give our support to removing all racial discrimination in all its forms. We’re looking forward to continuing our strong working relationship with Trade Unions to achieve a more inclusive society that tackles discrimination and actively promotes equality and diversity.”

"A fairer workplace is a better workplace, so by actively eliminating discrimination from all 9 protected characteristics, we will be ensuring a better public service for people across Conwy.”

Calvin Smeda, UNISON Regional Organiser, said: “Conwy County Borough Council should be congratulated on being the first North Wales authority in signing the charter as this will reaffirm Conwy County Borough Council’s commitment to equality, and social justice. It also sends a strong message that they will be dedicated to confronting discrimination and prejudice head-on.

“Leading by example is not just a suggestion; it is a necessity. In our communities that we serve, we must embody the values we champion - words, actions, and policies should reflect our dedication to creating a more inclusive society. Let our actions be a hope to others, that racism has no place in our world.”
