As a young person with no work experience, Charlie found it difficult to attract employers' interest and secure interviews. Living in a remote rural area with limited public transport and few local job opportunities created additional barriers. Over time, these challenges affected his confidence and motivation.

When Charlie joined Conwy Employment Hub, his lack of motivation meant his engagement with his mentor was inconsistent. In the early stages, his mother often spoke to his mentor on his behalf, playing an important supportive role while Charlie began to build his confidence.

The first priority was tackling Charlie's transport issues. After discussing different options, he decided to work towards passing his motorcycle test. With support from his family, he was then able to buy a motorbike, giving him the independence to travel further and significantly expanding the range of jobs he could apply for.

With his new-found independence, Charlie worked with his mentor to update his CV, explore career options and identify roles that matched his interests. As he began applying for jobs, his mentor provided one-to-one interview coaching to help build his confidence and prepare him to present himself positively to employers.

Although Charlie was actively applying for jobs, he was still struggling to secure interviews. To strengthen his CV, his mentor suggested volunteering as a way to gain valuable skills and experience. Initially hesitant, Charlie met with the British Heart Foundation to explore the opportunities available and came away with a better understanding of how volunteering can help young people develop confidence and improve their employment prospects.

Charlie continued applying for jobs and was invited to interview for a role at a local amusement park. Thanks to the preparation and encouragement he received from his mentor, he approached the interview with confidence and successfully secured the position. His journey shows how practical support, perseverance and growing self-belief can help overcome barriers and open the door to employment.
