From his first meeting with his mentor, Dan demonstrated a strong work ethic and a genuine determination to return to employment. He was organised, punctual and worked well both independently and as part of a team. As a fluent Welsh speaker with a full UK driving licence, he had many of the qualities employers were looking for.
On joining the Hub, Dan showed he was keen to return to work and in particular within a driving role but he lacked a CV that highlighted his skills and work experience. Living in temporary accommodation also meant there were underlying challenges linked to stability, confidence and managing setbacks.
Dan’s mentor worked with him on bringing his CV up to date while highlighting his many key strengths that would attract him to an employer. When this was ready, his mentor encouraged him to attend the Hub’s forthcoming Driving and Construction Careers and Job Fair which would give him direct access to employers in the area. Dan had lots of positive discussions with the employers and in particular a parcel and pallet delivery company where he made such a good impression that he was invited to an interview.
Although the interview went well, Dan was disappointed to learn that the employer had decided not to proceed with a trial. The rejection had a significant impact on him, leaving him feeling disheartened and questioning his ability to move forward.
Recognising that Dan needed support to maintain his confidence and momentum, his mentor suggested a volunteering opportunity with a local company. This would help him rebuild routine, maintain his wellbeing and continue developing his skills while searching for work. To remove any barriers, his mentor also arranged a bus ticket so he could attend the interview.
Shortly afterwards, the parcel and pallet delivery company contacted Dan again and invited him to complete a three-day work trial. The trial was a success, and he was offered a 48-hour-per-week contract. Securing the role transformed Dan's outlook. He was enthusiastic, motivated and spoke with renewed pride and optimism about the future.
Dan's journey highlights the emotional impact that setbacks can have, particularly for people experiencing instability. Despite having the skills and experience employers needed, one rejection significantly affected his confidence. With personalised support, practical advice and timely encouragement from his mentor, Dan regained his confidence and ultimately secured employment. His story is a reminder that setbacks don't have to define the outcome, and that the right support can help people seize opportunities when they arise.
