Case study: Fred

When Fred joined the Hub, he had recently undergone major surgery and was still attending regular medical appointments. His health condition meant he had to surrender his driving licence, creating transport difficulties and contributing to depression, anxiety and high blood pressure. Despite these challenges, Fred remained determined to return to work so he could help support his wife and two school-aged children.

Fred spoke openly with his mentor about his circumstances. With his wife working full time and two children still at school, he needed a part-time role that would fit around both his medical needs and family responsibilities. Together, they agreed realistic goals and focused on opportunities that would be achievable and sustainable.

Through regular one-to-one mentoring, Fred gradually rebuilt his confidence and became more confident searching for work independently. Together, they focused on vacancies within walking distance to overcome his transport barriers. His determination paid off when he spotted a job opportunity on Facebook. After applying, he was invited to complete a trial shift and was successfully offered a position as a Cleaner, Prep and General Kitchen Assistant.

Fred's journey shows that complex health conditions and personal circumstances do not have to prevent someone from returning to work. With personalised support, realistic goal setting and encouragement, he regained his confidence, found employment that suited his circumstances and took an important step towards a more secure future for himself and his family.
