George had spent his career working in the hospitality industry both in the UK and overseas, building a wealth of skills and experience. However, after being made redundant, he decided he no longer wanted to return to an industry he felt offered little long-term security. Instead, he wanted a career that would provide stability and help him rebuild his independence, but he wasn't sure where to start.
When George joined the Hub, he told his mentor he felt uncertain about his future and lacked confidence in his ability to start a completely new career. Together, they explored his previous work experience, identified the many transferable skills he had developed and discussed his long-term goals, including finding secure employment and moving into his own accommodation.
Although George had extensive work experience, it was all within hospitality, making a career change feel daunting. Rather than suggesting a particular path, his mentor encouraged George to research different industries before their next meeting and bring along any ideas that interested him. This gave George ownership of his journey while helping him explore new possibilities.
George decided he wanted to work in construction and had even identified a local housing development where he hoped to find work. Recognising his commitment, his mentor enrolled him on a CSCS course which covered the required Health & Safety in Construction Environment Level and him successfully passing his CSCS Touch-Screen Test, earning his CSCS card.
Armed with his new qualification, George approached the construction company working on the housing development he had identified. His initiative paid off, and he was offered a job with an immediate start.
George's journey demonstrates how determination, personalised mentoring and access to the right training can give people the confidence to change careers successfully. By recognising his transferable skills and equipping him with industry qualifications, the Hub helped George turn uncertainty into opportunity.
Today, George is thriving in a construction role that he enjoys. The stability of his new career has also enabled him to move into rented accommodation, achieving his goal of living independently and creating a more secure future.
