Free public wifi is available across the majority of Conwy Council sites and in some outdoor locations, with the exception of Venue Cymru who have their own arrangements.

You can connect to it by selecting “Amddim_Conwy_Free” from any of the locations in which it is available.

The Council's contract is with North who have selected an external provider Purple Wi-Fi to deliver our free wifi services safely and in compliance with data protection legislation. Details of how the Purple system manages data and security are available here. Users connecting to the free wifi service are also asked to provide consent for how their data is used prior to accessing the service. Users can also find Purple’s privacy notice and details on how to request any information held about them from the portal’s login pages.

As a minimum requirement users are asked only to provide an email address before allowing to access this service. Users may optionally provide additional other information such as full name or date of birth. The system also collects the connecting device’s MAC address (a unique identifier) for safeguarding and security purposes. The Council may then utilise this data for example to analyse how many times the Free Wi-Fi service is used at certain locations, most popular connectivity times or most popular locations.  No personally identifiable information can be seen in these aggregated reports.

Where a user of the Free Wi-Fi service specifically has “ticked” to agree their consent to provide additional then it may also be used in an anonymised format to report on demographics such as age ranges, gender or interests such as “sports”, “theatre” or “film.”  Access to this anonymised data is strictly controlled to designated officers in the Council.

The Council may then use this information to contact users where a user has consented by e-mail or text with relevant information, e.g. future events, services or promotions. Any personally identifiable information is automatically deleted from the Purple system 13 months after any user stops connecting to the service.

As part of the free wifi service, certain categories of website are also blocked for safeguarding and security purposes and these are published on the Council website.

No records of internet activity whilst using the Free Wi-Fi Service are stored by Conwy County Borough Council or our partners.
