The key issues and opportunities for this Active Travel route are:

Figure 1 Summary of issues and opportunities

Theme Issues Opportunities
Existing and future active travel network  Limited current active travel provision within the study area, with no link between Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction.  Conwy’s revised Active Travel Network Map has been developed in draft and highlights aspirations for integrated network with connections from Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction.
Local connections by public transport  Irregular and infrequent public transport services. No direct connections from Glan Conwy to Conwy.  Enabling walking and cycling over shorter distances would provide alternative travel options to public transport and private car.
Road network provision  On-road cycling is low and generally remained constant over time, with little growth.

The road environment is not conducive to cycling. Some accidents involving cyclists along A470 and A547.
Providing dedicated infrastructure for cyclists would significantly enhance the environment for active travel.
Methods of travel  High levels of private car usage and low levels of cycling.  Dedicated active travel provision, alongside wider behavioural change measures, could result in a notable shift away from cars.
Destinations and access to opportunities  A range of amenities, required by residents of Glan Conwy, are in Llandudno Junction and Conwy.

Access to services from Glan Conwy is considered poor by Welsh standards.

A lack of links between communities makes it challenging to access services by walking, cycling or wheeling.
Improved active travel infrastructure would improve access to employment, education and other amenities, as well as benefitting health and well-being of  local residents.
People likely to travel by bike (propensity to cycle)  Low levels of current active travel.  Reasonable preference for cycling from Glan Conwy to Llandudno Junction – a potential not yet met. Short distance trips could be converted from private car to active travel.
Role of tourism  Tourist and leisure trips not a primary focus of Active Travel (Wales) Act.  A wide variety of tourist and leisure attractions in the area, with access to longer-distance touring routes. Offers potential to expand local active travel for tourism and leisure purposes.
