Young People Build Leadership Skills at North Wales Youth Council Network Event

Youth Council Network Event Meeting 26.10.26

North Wales Youth Council Network meeting

Thirty Youth Council members from across North Wales came together for the fourth North Wales Youth Council Network meeting this (26/10/26). The event was hosted by Conwy Youth Council at Conwy County Borough Council’s Coed Pella offices in Colwyn Bay.

The event was specially designed for members of Youth Councils from each of the six North Wales authorities and was run in conjunction with Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Throughout the day, young people took part in interactive activities, discussions, and film-based learning, exploring issues they are passionate about and identifying changes they would like to see in their communities and beyond. Working in pairs and small groups, participants reflected on why these issues are important to them and how they can communicate their message effectively.

The training introduced participants to Public Narrative, a leadership and influencing approach developed at Harvard University. The technique helps individuals use their own experiences and values to tell compelling stories that inspire others, build connections, and encourage action on issues that matter to them.

Young people were encouraged to express their ideas in a variety of ways, including written pieces, storyboards, and artwork, allowing them to choose the format that best suited their strengths and interests. By the end of the session, participants had begun developing their own Public Narratives, creating leadership stories designed to inspire action and influence change.

The training also introduced practical coaching techniques, helping participants learn how to support and encourage one another as leaders within their local youth councils and communities.

The event highlighted the commitment of youth councils across North Wales to investing in young people's leadership development, ensuring they have the skills, confidence, and support needed to become effective advocates for the issues that matter most to their generation.

Youth Councils provide an opportunity for young people aged 11-18 years of age to discuss issues that affect their communities and voice their opinions to decision makers in local and national government. Representatives from Conwy Youth Council are able to participate in Scrutiny meetings and be part of the democratic process in Conwy County Borough Council.
