Do I need approval?
Your food business will require approval if you intend to use "unprocessed products of animal origin" eg fresh meat, raw minced meat, raw milk, eggs, to produce any, or a combination of the following:
- Minced meat and meat preparations.
- Meat products and mechanically separated meat.
- Live bi-valve molluscs and fishery products.
- Raw milk (other than raw cows’ milk).
- Dairy products.
- Eggs (not primary production).
- Egg products.
- Certain cold stores and wholesale markets.
- Frogs legs and snails.
- Rendered animal fats and greaves.
- Treated stomachs, bladders and intestines.
- Gelatine and collagen.
If your business supplies food of animal origin to the final consumer only, i.e. the person who eats the food product, then it may be exempt from approval however you will still need to ensure your business is registered with ourselves.
What do I need to do?
If you think your proposed food business may need approval, please contact us to arrange for a visit to your proposed premises. At the visit there may need to be a planned programme of works in order to achieve approval and you and/or your employees may need to gain further training proportionate to the size and nature of your business.
In addition to meeting certain structural requirements your premises will need to have a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point system in placein order to be granted approval.
If your food business requires approval you cannot operate until approval has been granted by the authority and a unique approval number issued which must be applied to the product.
You are also required to have received adequate training in the application of HACCP principles and for you and your staff to have been instructed or trained in food hygiene matters to a level appropriate to your jobs.
Please contact the Food Safety Team.
