Occupational Therapist

What is an Occupational Therapist?

Occupational Therapists help people to build resilience to better manage their daily lives and circumstances. They assess and make recommendations appropriate to people’s needs based on where they are now and where they would like to be.

What core skills do Occupational Therapists need?

Occupational Therapists need to be excellent communicators. This includes being able to actively listen and assess what needs to be done to help people. They need to be patient, tactful, empathetic, enthusiastic and motivated.

What Occupational Therapist roles are available in Conwy?

Our Occupational Therapists work across many teams in our wider Social Care Service. There’s family support and intervention, vulnerable people, early advice and assistance, older people and hospital social work and our disability teams.

What skills and qualifications are needed to get started?

To work as an Occupational Therapist you’ll need a Diploma or BSc in Occupation Therapy, but you don’t necessarily need this to apply to work with Conwy as we train many of our people on the job. You will also need a registration with Health Professions Council.

Average salary: £36,200 - 39,400 depending on experience.

Meet Lindsey

I joined Conwy Social Care in 2001 as a newly qualified Occupational Therapist. As a new mum I was able to work part time and balance work and family commitments.

Over the years I have enjoyed working with children and adults as a Community Occupational Therapist. Seeing people retain their independence and be able to engage in occupations that are meaningful to them is incredibly rewarding.

I progressed to a team manager role and now manage a small team of Occupational Therapist Assistants and the Telecare Service. Working for Conwy has given me an interesting and challenging career where my personal development and training has been supported.

Social Care has offered me flexibility with hours and workplace, which has been really valuable to me whilst bringing up my children and maintaining a work life balance. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Conwy. No two days are the same and there’s never a dull moment!
