Have you got what it takes to become a Social Worker?
What does a Social Worker do?
Social Workers see the bigger picture and how it affects lives. They strive for an equal and unbiased society. They help people recognise their strengths and develop their skills and confidence as well as supporting them to resolve any challenges they face.
What core skills do Social Workers need?
Social Workers need to be excellent communicators. This includes being able to actively listen and assess what needs to be done to help people. They need to be patient, tactful, empathetic, enthusiastic and motivated.
What Social Worker roles are available in Conwy?
Our Social Workers work across many teams in our wider Social Care Service. This includes working with children and young people, adults and people with disabilities and their families and support networks.
What skills and qualifications are needed to get started?
To work as a Social Worker you’ll need a recognised and relevant social work qualification and be registered with Social Care Wales. Conwy also offers a Social Work Traineeship where we support our current staff to gain professional qualifications.
Average salary: £32,900 - 39,400
Meet Dafydd
I have worked for Conwy for seven years. My first job was a Youth Participation Officer where I co-ordinated Conwy Youth Council, a participation group for children looked after and ran a participation group for care leavers.
After gaining experience I applied to become a Personal Advisor working with care leavers. As a Personal Advisor I offered advice and guidance and practical support with housing issues, health, money management and life skills.
Whilst working as Personal Advisor I applied for the Social Work Traineeship with Conwy through the Open University and was successful. After qualifying I was fortunate to secure the role of Transitional Social Worker in the Vulnerable People Team.
I am really enjoying the challenge of being a Social Worker, especially meeting new people and meeting each day not knowing where it will take me.
Conwy is a progressive and forward thinking local authority. The staff and managers are supportive and are always encouraging me to reach my potential and go for new opportunities.
