Choral Festival Economic Boost

The North Wales Choral Festival takes place on a weekend in early November and is organised by Conwy County Borough Council.

The three-day event is hosted at Venue Cymru and attracts around 2,500 people to Llandudno, who visit to compete as part of a choir or as a member of the audience.

Since its beginnings as a one-day competition back in 1988, the festival has grown year on year and includes a diverse selection of categories, school workshops, competitions, and community performances.

As ever, this year’s festival is already looking like it will be another success with dozens of choirs already registered to compete in the event.

Cllr Louse Emery is the cabinet member for economic development and praised the competition. She said, “In the winter months, tourist towns like Llandudno naturally slow down due to the season. But events like the Choral Festival help the town to thrive even as the weather worsens and the nights draw in.

“This is a fantastic event that is a valuable addition to the exciting programme of events we have in Conwy. Choirs, by their nature, are large groups. These visitors travel to North Wales from all over the UK, and all these people want accommodation, food and drink, and entertainment when they get here. The festival brightens up the autumn and is vital to many hoteliers, publicans, café owners, and businesses in Llandudno.”

The figures were released by Conwy County Borough Council following an economic evaluation, which used an industry standard formula developed by Sheffield Hallam University, to calculate the value to the area. The estimated value of the festival to the area was £394,000. The information was compiled by surveys completed by those attending the festival.
